GOVERNMENTAL RELATIONS

Volume 5, Number 4, March 25, 1996

The House Appropriations Subcommittee on Education discussed cutting $185 million from their budget while the Senate's education budget committee released their targeted redirection numbers during the third week of the legislative session. Budget discussions will continue this week in both houses. The Senate Ways and Means Subcommittee on Education hopes to have a budget completed for consideration by the full committee prior to the holidays during the week of April 34d. The House is under the same deadline.

In a headline-grabbing event last week, the Senate Rules and Calendar Committee passed a rule which prohibits Senators from accepting food and drink paid for by lobbyists. Senators can still attend receptions and events made up of their constituents. The House may pass something similar.

This week is the last scheduled week for committee hearings in the House. Bills left in committee are generally thought dead for the session.

On a lighter note, the Capitol Press Corps held their annual press skits on Monday, March 18th, at the Musical Moon. Each year, the press corps sponsors, produces and performs a variety of skits, parodying the legislature and state government. They once again took a few small jabs at FSU!
