GOVERNMENTAL RELATIONS

Volume 5, Number 5, April 2, 1996

Some of the topics of interest the fourth week of session included the "Presidential Accountability and Authority Act" (CS/HB 2553), access/excess, more budget cuts and Ross Perot .

The House Higher Education committee met for the last time this session last week, taking up Representative Jim DavisU Committee Substitute for House Bill 2553, the Presidential Accountability and Authority Act. The bill passed with several amendments and is on its way to the Appropriations Committee (see Spotlight on Bills).

The Senate Ways and Means Subcommittee on Education last week held a Workshop on access to the State University System and excess hours as a cost saving measure (see related story). Nothing was finalized, and all indications are that this discussion will continue throughout the legislative session.

On the home front, Mr. Ross Perot spoke to a packed audience at Ruby Diamond Auditorium on Thursday evening. Mr. Perot mentioned that he was opposed to tuition increases. He also talked about balancing the budget , creating term limits , handing more power over to local governments and creating more jobs for the American workers.
